Over het verplichte werk
Band No 1: Brass Band Rijnmond (Netherlands)

Opening to Figure 51: (Quartet feature)
Conductor leaves the quartet of players to play alone. Confident and seet to start but soon falters (especially horn line).

52-322: (Build to main themes)
58: Lines join but no sense of beat. Overdone just before 106. 154: Fine timpani solo. 162: not pp for us but builds well and all musical lines are heard. Trombones stand at 233 - no real dynamic contrast â€“ it's marked mf. 278: semis a bit messy around the stand. 294: no triplet features heard clearly. 306: Symphonic line ends things off nicely.

323-402: (Bottles + Marimba/Xylo feature)
Better. It works well. Some neat touches â€“ has almost a steady engine feel. But more 'Ivor the Engine' than Flying Sctosman.

Fugue-End: (Complex fugue, return of themes and close)
A messy start - each subject not always clear. 471: Troms up again with theme - lacks some pace. A touch messy and harsh at times. The 1812 theme appears and takes us to a big ending.

Overall:
Not a bad. Error strewn though and a lack of detail [not helped by the barn like acoustic] in too many places.

Het vrije werk
Band no 5: Brass Band Rijnmond, Erik Janssen (Netherlands)
Own choice: Ginnungagap, Johan Evenepeol

Band forms in two wide arcs. The effect works. Scrappy ensemble and individual errors but the essence of the music is evident. Three troms stand around band to good effect.

The mood changes very successfully and horn delivers in fine style. Unfortunately - other aren't so good. The band a convey a wonderful musical sense throughout here and this is delivered so well.

A neat witty end in contrast to the broad scope of the music.

Fine ensemble start to last section. Percussion work is well intergrated. The band build well to a good chorale. Controlled finishing section when the back arc stand once more to an effective close.

Overall a different band from yesterday. A fine reading of this wonderfully different piece.

Heb het helaas niet gered om zatermiddag te gaan luisteren. Als ik zo de resultaten bekijk wel jammer. Had graag al die nieuwe stukken met speciaal slagwerk en aparte opstellingen willen horen en zien.
