Voor de liefhebber begint om 14.55 het vervolg op de Jazz geschiedenis.

Een generatie muzikanten, geconfronteerd met het verpletterende talent van Charlie Parker, gaat de uitdaging aan om zijn vernieuwingen te overtreffen. De visionaire pianist Thelonious Monk creëert met zijn excentrieke persoonlijkheid een geheel eigen muziekstijl, terwijl John Lewis met zijn uiterst stijlvolle Modern Jazz Quartet het evenwicht in de bebop verfijnt tussen improvisatie en compositie. Toch zijn er maar weinig mensen die luisteren naar bebop. Muzikanten uit Californië maken een nieuwe ‘mellow’ muziekstijl: de ‘cool jazz’. En Dave Brubeck mengt jazz met klassieke muziek en produceert het eerste jazz album waarvan meer dan een miljoen platen worden verkocht: “Time Out”. In 1955 overlijdt Charlie Parker op 34-jarige leeftijd, zijn lichaam verwoest door heroïne. Ondertussen is voor zijn oude handlanger in de muziek, Miles Davis, de ‘cool sound’ alweer passé en staat hij klaar om jazz een nieuwe richting te geven.
