BIRD is dé Rotterdamse club voor jazz, soul, hiphop, funk en nieuwe electronica. Naast eten, drinken en dansen kun je er ook optredens bijwonen van de muzikale smaakmakers van dit moment. Op vrijdag 15 maart laten Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators (UK/FIN) horen hoe hun nieuwe album, Tortured Soul, klinkt. Na een aantal jaar haar stem te hebben geleend aan The The werd de in Brooklyn geboren Nicole Willis frontvrouw van de New Yorkse acid jazzgroep Repercussions. Haar faam groeide zodanig dat ze door de legendarische Curtis Mayfield gevraagd werd voor een duet. Ook ging Willis een samenwerking aan met Leftfield: ze schreef en zong de lead vocals voor de track ‘Swords’, die later werd gebruik in de film Go uit 1999. In 2000 bracht ze haar eerste solo-album, Soul Makeover, uit, waarvoor ze samenwerkte met producers en songwriters als Dharma One, Ercola, Nuspirit Helsinki, (echtgenoot!) Jimi Tenor en Maurice Fulton. In 2005 vonden Willis en het funkcombo The Soul Investigators elkaar. Het resultaat, Keep Reachin’ Up uit 2005, werd meer dan positief ontvangen: de track ‘Feeling Free’ werd door Gilles Peterson uitgeroepen tot Track of the Year en het titelnummer werd gebruikt in Obama’s laatste verkiezingscampagne. Nu is het wachten op de opvolger Tortured Soul, die ieder moment kan uitkomen, en de live-weergave ervan in BIRD!
